Painting work outside the house

Maintaining your home's paintwork is more than just an aesthetic choice; it's a crucial aspect of safeguarding your property from the elements and prolonging the lifespan of its key components. Discover essential tips for checking your home's paintwork and learn how these practices can save you from costly repairs and ensure your home remains a picture of durability.

Good paintwork protects various parts of your existing or newly built home from dirt, rain, and wear and tear. This applies to both the exterior and interior of your entire house. Paintwork also plays a major role in home maintenance. It keeps your window frames, doors, and windows looking good for longer and extends their lifespan considerably. Maintaining and keeping your window frames up to date is crucial! Proper maintenance maximizes the lifespan of the paintwork and prevents wood rot.

  • Identify critical points in time by checking the woodwork every spring and autumn and take precautions to prevent further decay (wood rot).
  • During your annual inspection, also pay attention to the sealing between the glazing and the woodwork; this must be 100% sealed to prevent moisture ingress (especially the horizontal parts).
  • Pay particular attention to areas requiring maintenance, such as transitions between horizontal and vertical woodwork, the undersides of wood and plywood, wood joints, and the clearance around windows and doors.
  • Paintwork requires maintenance if the paint is powdery, doesn't adhere well, or has cracked down to the substrate. In that case, remove the entire old layer.
  • If applicable, scrape small seams and holes clean and fill them with a two-part epoxy repair compound. You can also repair larger damage such as wood rot with this. You can also seal seams with acrylic sealant.
  • Naturally, inspecting the paintwork is part of a building inspection , so you'll quickly know whether you need to carry out maintenance work in the short or longer term.

The price for exterior painting depends on the type of house you have and the painter's hourly rate. The hourly rate for exterior painting is approximately €30 to €40 per hour. Paint, other material costs, and VAT are not included in these prices.

Do it yourself or outsource?

If your house's paintwork needs replacing (often every 5 to 6 years), hiring a professional painting company isn't such a bad idea. The cost of having a house painted is often underestimated. Unlike interior painting, exterior painting isn't often quoted per hour or per square meter. In most cases, the entire job is accepted with a fixed price. The total price can, of course, vary depending on the situation.

Depending on the time of year and the condition of the existing paintwork, a painter will calculate the cost of the job. Exterior painting work can include the following: dormer windows, exterior walls, exterior doors, exterior window frames, eaves, fascia boards, and other areas.
