Carports: style and functionality

Is your carport ready to withstand the elements and the test of time? Discover the essential steps to ensure your carport's structural integrity, from addressing potential woodwork defects to optimizing drainage and preventing water damage, all while safeguarding your investment and prolonging its lifespan.

See the index page of the knowledge base for all kinds of topics such as bitumen roofing , painting , etc. Here we only discuss the specific carport properties, comments and any defects.

Woodwork of carport and/or shelter

The woodwork of a carport and/or canopy is important. If no defects are noted and it can be stated that both the woodwork and the structural part of the carport are in good condition, then the whole can function perfectly as intended.

The roof structure of the carport and/or lean-to may be too light . The beams may be sagging, preventing optimal drainage from the roof. There is therefore a risk that the sagging of the roof surface will continue. A possible long-term solution could be to reinforce the existing beams or install a support beam . In either case, we recommend consulting a qualified contractor who can advise you on this.

Please note: Wood rot or defects may be present in the structural or non-structural woodwork of the carport and/or canopy. Carefully inspect the woodwork, especially the joints, corners, and joints.

Other defects of the carport and/or canopy

If the roof of the carport and/or lean-to is dirty, or if there is too much dirt on the roof, this will damage the roof covering and shorten its lifespan. Algae and moss growth , leaves, and all other dirt should be removed. The roof should be cleaned of such dirt and/or maintained at least once a year.

If the drain on the roof of the carport and/or lean-to isn't at the lowest point, the slope and drainage are likely insufficient. This means water will remain on the roof. Excess water will add extra weight and pressure to the roof surface, and depending on the construction, this weight can cause the roof to sag slightly. It might be an option to deepen the current drain or improve the slope at some point to create better drainage.

  • Water on a roof is disastrous! Standing water on the roof causes additional pollution.
  • Additional contamination on a roof, when it dries, produces micro-organisms that attack the top layer of the covering.

Alignment of adjacent plots

If the carport is separate from other buildings, it's important to know how it's founded. Is the carport aligned with the other buildings, or is there any deviation? If so, the foundation needs to be examined more closely.
