Bought a new home? 5 actions to take right away

Buying a new home is a thrilling milestone, but it can quickly turn into a costly headache if hidden defects are lurking beneath the surface. To safeguard your investment and ensure a seamless transition into your new abode, discover the critical importance of a thorough building inspection and essential post-purchase action points that can save you from unforeseen expenses and security risks.

Buying a new home is exciting. It's a new step, an investment in the future, and simply a whole new chapter in your life. Before you buy a property, it's advisable to have a building inspection performed. Homekeur is happy to assist you with this. We'll determine the exact condition of your property for you.

This way, you can prevent buying a home with numerous hidden defects, which will ultimately cost you a lot of money. We provide you with a building inspection report containing all our findings, recommendations, and cost estimates. If there are no nasty surprises and you've already purchased the property, there are new action points to take. We'll provide insight into 5 action points that you should take as soon as possible.

1. Organize a major cleaning

When you move into a new home, it's nice to have a fresh start. It's a good idea to organize a thorough cleaning before moving your belongings into the new home. Clean the entire new home and clean your belongings while they're still in the old one, so they're clean and ready for transport to your new home. This way, you'll truly have a fresh start in your new home.

2. Let everything run smoothly

Sometimes there's only a few days between the previous owner's departure and your move-in. However, it can also take a longer time, and during this time, everything comes to a standstill. It's advisable to give everything a good cleaning. Flush all the toilets a few times and let the faucets run for a while.

3. Check all filters

Let's stick with plumbing for a moment. All faucets are equipped with a filter. In rare cases, these are new filters. Therefore, it's a good idea to check the filters. Ideally, you should replace all the relevant filters. This means not only replacing the faucet filters, but also, for example, the ventilation filters.

4. Painting inside and outside

Painting is a significant job. However, it's important to keep it up to date, both inside and out. Good paintwork protects the home. Doors and window frames, for example, last much longer when they're well-maintained. It's easier to paint before you move in, when the house is still empty, than when you've been living there for a while. So, if you have the budget for painting both inside and out, always do the painting first.

5. Replacing the locks

When you've bought a new home, it's always wise to have the locks changed. The previous owner will have given you keys, of course, but there's no guarantee that these are all the keys. Keys can easily be duplicated and are often given to family and friends. A seller doesn't have to deliberately keep a key. This can certainly happen accidentally. You don't want a stranger with a key to your home. Choose safety and have all the locks changed.

First get a building inspection, then buy!

We've naturally mentioned a few important things here for when you've already purchased the property. However, the most important step is one that takes place before you even buy the house. We're talking about the building inspection , of course. It's important for you to know exactly what you're buying.

You want to know when you'll face higher costs, and you especially don't want to be surprised by hidden defects. We're happy to take care of that for you by conducting a building inspection. Schedule an appointment online or contact us for more information and advice, free of obligation.
