6 tips for choosing a good contractor for your renovation

Embarking on a home renovation journey requires not just vision but also the right contractor to bring that vision to life. In this blog post, we unravel 6 essential tips for selecting a contractor who can ensure your project runs smoothly, stays within budget, and delivers the high-quality results you desire.

Renovating an existing or new home? Choosing the right contractor is crucial. Naturally, you want a desirable end result, avoid the hassle, and avoid spending more than necessary. In short, you need a lot of certainty. In this blog post, we share 6 tips for choosing a good contractor.

1. Have a building inspection carried out

It's recommended to have a building inspection performed first. This inspection will reveal the necessary issues and also help you determine what (additional) work needs to be done. The building inspection ensures you won't encounter any unpleasant surprises later and clarifies what the contractor should focus on. This will help you find the right contractor.

2. Don't choose the first one you see

It's wise to choose a contractor based in your area. They're well-versed in the local rules and regulations. This also saves you a lot on travel expenses. However, this doesn't mean you should just go with the first one you find in your area. Check reviews from previous customers, carefully consider the company's experiences, and take your time choosing the right company.

3. Attention to waiting times

If you're planning to renovate your home, you'll want the project to begin as soon as possible. You might even want to have the entire renovation done in a new home while you're still living in your current one. This makes you even more time-sensitive. Therefore, always pay attention to waiting times and the estimated time the renovation will take. Wait times are often shorter with larger construction companies than with smaller ones.

4. Costs and payment method

Always request quotes from multiple companies to get a clear understanding of the various costs. If a price seems too good to be true, remember that in the vast majority of cases, it is. Pay attention not only to the costs but also to the payment method. If cash is required, it's usually unwise to do business with the contractor in question. You'll have no proof of payment. The work will then be (partly) done illegally.

5. Don't be tempted

It's very easy to be seduced by an extremely low price or extremely fast service. Remember, a very low price and/or very fast service often come at the expense of quality. You don't want this. Don't be tempted and always choose quality over quantity.

6. A contractor who understands you

You present your wishes and requirements to the contractor. It's important that the contractor understands exactly what you want. The schedule, project, and experience should align with this. If you feel this isn't entirely, or not at all, the case, then choose a different contractor.

The building inspection

You can have a building inspection carried out before the renovation, but you can also have a building inspection carried out (or later) after all the work has been completed. In either case, you're welcome at Homekeur. We carry out the building inspection(s) professionally. Curious? You can schedule an appointment with us directly online .
