Tips for good ventilation: prevent moisture problems
Proper ventilation in a home is essential for preventing moisture problems. Many homes suffer from moisture problems, to varying degrees, and this can have very unpleasant consequences. While it naturally negatively impacts the overall condition of the home, moisture problems can also pose health risks. During a building inspection by Homekeur, your home will be inspected for moisture problems, among other things.
Identify moisture problems with a building inspection
In some cases, it's clearly visible that a home has moisture problems. For example, you might see mold on the walls or damp patches on the walls or ceiling. In other cases, moisture problems are present but not immediately visible. Therefore, it's always advisable to have a building inspection carried out when you're considering buying a home. The building inspection report contains all the information about the property's condition. It also immediately indicates whether there are any moisture problems. If there aren't any, and you want to prevent future moisture problems in your home, we're happy to give you 5 helpful tips.
1. Always leave the mechanical ventilation on
Is your home equipped with mechanical ventilation? Always leave it switched on under normal circumstances. This means you should only switch off the mechanical ventilation when maintenance is being performed on the system or when you receive a notification that you should keep windows and doors closed due to an emergency. In all other situations, leave the mechanical ventilation switched on.
2. Cleaning and maintenance
Ventilation grilles, valves, and exhaust ducts are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. However, this is important to ensure proper ventilation. It's recommended to thoroughly clean the grilles and valves once a year. The engine needs maintenance every two years, and the exhaust ducts should be cleaned every eight years.
3. Ensure good flow
Briefly opening a window in one room isn't enough if fresh air can't flow through the house. For good fresh airflow, it's important that it can pass under doors. Therefore, it's recommended to shorten interior doors if they're too long. A gap of about 1.5 centimeters under the door is sufficient. If this isn't possible or desirable, installing grilles in the doors is another option.
4. Fresh air every day
It's important to let fresh air flow through your home every day. This doesn't mean you have to leave a window open all day. Half an hour is enough. This also immediately saves you energy. Fresh air heats faster and more efficiently than stale air. So you won't need to heat as hard or as long when the air is fresh.
5. Measures for better ventilation
Are you planning to renovate your home or insulate it? In several situations, such as replacing window frames, there are opportunities to take immediate measures to improve ventilation. For example, you could consider installing CO2 sensors or installing wind pressure-regulating grilles in your window frames.
Avoid purchasing a home with moisture problems
When damp problems arise in a home, resolving them can be very difficult. In almost all cases, this involves costs. Are you considering buying a home? Then it's always a good idea to have a building inspection carried out to determine whether there are any damp problems in the house. This will provide you with optimal insight and clarity.
