Peppermint Oil Against Pests: Does It Work?

Peppermint is a delightful scent. At least, that's what people think. However, many animals and insects have a different opinion. Peppermint oil is therefore an ideal pest repellent. Here are some tips on how to rid your home and garden of unwanted visitors with this natural remedy.

Protect your plants with peppermint oil

Both indoors and outdoors, you can easily protect your plants from all kinds of pests. Aphids and ants, for example, don't like peppermint oil. To combat these, add 8 to 10 drops of the oil to a plant sprayer and fill it with water. Then, simply shake well and spray the plants.

Keep insects out of your home without pesticides

Mosquitoes, flies, silverfish, fruit flies, and spiders are usually not welcome guests. A special insect spray can help, but this introduces toxins into your home. Fortunately, you can also combat them naturally with peppermint oil. For example, drip a little peppermint oil on your pillow before bed to deter mosquitoes. Or diffuse some peppermint oil in your bedroom with a tea light to repel mosquitoes. For ants, spiders, and silverfish, use the plant sprayer again and spray in areas where these insects frequent. Spiders can be repelled by spraying in the corners where they roost. Fruit flies and house flies will run away when you spray their flight paths.

Also useful for chasing away mice

Mice may look cute, but they don't belong indoors. Still, a trap or poison is a scary thought. Peppermint oil is a humane way to repel them. Try to pinpoint where the mice are entering your home and place a few cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil there. The scent will deter them.
