Is it allowed and safe to remove asbestos yourself?

Discovering asbestos in your home can be unsettling, but understanding how to handle it can ease your worries. While asbestos might not pose an immediate health threat, knowing when and how to safely remove it—whether by yourself or with professional help—is crucial to ensuring your home's safety and compliance with legal regulations.

A building inspection by Homekeur may reveal the presence of asbestos in your home. Until the mid-1970s, this material was used as insulation. There's really no need to be alarmed by asbestos in your home; it poses no immediate health risk. However, it does eventually need to be removed. In some cases, you can easily do this yourself.

When are you allowed to remove asbestos yourself?

The law contains rules that indicate in which cases you are allowed to remove asbestos yourself.

  • The amount of asbestos may not exceed 35 m2
  • The asbestos sheets may not be stapled or nailed and they must be intact
  • You may only remove asbestos from your home or an outbuilding attached to your home.

In all other cases, you must hire a company to remove asbestos . These measures are in place to prevent the release of large quantities of asbestos particles during removal, which can cause serious health damage.

How do I know if my new home contains asbestos?

If you're buying a new house, you might want to know if it contains asbestos. You can have this checked during a building inspection. An asbestos inventory can then be performed. A house containing asbestos may be sold, but it must be included in the purchase agreement signed by the notary. Asbestos should generally be removed, but in many cases, it's not necessary to have it removed immediately.

It is better to have asbestos removed by a professional

If you're unsure whether you can remove the asbestos yourself, it's always wise to have it done by an expert. They will take appropriate precautions to prevent the spread of asbestos particles. You can first have a specialized company conduct an inventory and provide a quote so you know the cost of asbestos removal in advance.
