Should you buy a home battery now or wait a while?

More and more people are taking a proactive approach to sustainability. This is, of course, a positive development. We're seeing more and more homes with solar panels. Purchasing a home battery is often a logical next step. However, many homeowners are wondering if this is really wise, or if they should wait a little longer.

A building inspection for the solar panel installation

Are you planning to buy a home with a solar panel system, but no home battery yet? A building inspection can clarify the quality of the existing system. If you don't have a solar panel system yet, but would like one, with or without a home battery, it's also important to have a building inspection performed. You want to be sure it's all feasible. Of course, it's also possible that both a solar panel system and a home battery are already present. These can be inspected for proper functioning.

Home battery benefits

Solar panels account for approximately 30 percent of total electricity consumption. This percentage can increase to around 75 percent if a home battery is installed. You can significantly save on electricity costs by using stored energy during peak rates. A subsidy of €250 per kilowatt-hour can be applied for for the home battery. The maximum subsidy per connection point is €3,200.

In the event of a power outage, you can easily rely on your home battery. A home battery is also good for the environment, of course, because it uses green energy generated by your solar panel installation. So you're being sustainable and saving significantly on your energy bill.

Disadvantages of a home battery

As you can see, there are quite a few advantages to a home battery. There are also disadvantages, especially if you don't already have one. The average purchase price of a home battery is around €8,000. If your home is less than 10 years old, you'll have to pay the high tax rate of 21 percent. Older homes are subject to the lower rate of 6 percent.

Many home batteries are difficult to recycle and contain raw materials that are currently considered scarce. This makes the home batteries themselves far from environmentally friendly. When you store solar energy, a certain percentage is always lost. Therefore, not everything is stored in a home battery.
