Burglar-proof home: 6 tips for safer living

Securing your home against burglary is crucial, especially with the seasonal spikes in break-ins during summer and winter. Discover how enhancing visibility, strategically placing valuables, building neighborly relations, and investing in high-quality security systems can fortify your home and provide peace of mind.

By ensuring your home is burglar-proof, you minimize the risk of burglary. Are you planning to buy a new home? Then it's a good idea to check how burglar-proof it is. A building inspection can assess various aspects of burglary, such as the quality and reliability of locks and hardware. Of course, there are also several things you can do yourself to live more safely. Homekeur offers six tips.

1. Make your home clearly visible

There are often two distinct waves of burglaries per year. In the summer, there's often a surge of burglaries during the daytime during the summer holidays. In the winter, there's a surge in burglaries in the evenings, and it's noticeable that relatively invisible homes are particularly targeted. It's therefore important to make your home highly visible. You can do this, for example, by installing sufficient garden lighting, possibly equipped with a motion sensor.

2. Hide valuables from view

Think carefully about the placement of valuables. For example, do you have a beautiful Swarovski collection in a display case? Then make sure the display case isn't visible through the window. Also, don't place other valuables, such as jewelry, computers, and tablets, in plain sight. Burglars often look through windows first to see if there's anything interesting to steal. Prevent them from seeing things that might interest them.

3. Install an alarm system

An alarm system is, of course, ideal for keeping unwanted guests out. Leaving the house? Simply activate the alarm system and you can be confident that it will trigger if windows or doors are tampered with. There are different types of alarm systems. Always ensure that an alarm system has a good quality mark.

4. Ensure good neighborly relations

Good relations with your neighbors, if you have them, always help prevent burglary. If you're away from home and there's activity around your property, a good neighbor will immediately alert you or call the police. The best guardians of your home are the people who live in the immediate vicinity. Of course, you're also a guardian of your neighbors' homes if you have good relations with them.

5. Give the impression that you are at home

The darker a house is, the more tempting it is for a burglar to try. Therefore, it's always a good idea to give the impression you're home. Leave some lights on, for example. Going on vacation ? Then make sure someone is there to collect the mail and put it out of sight. A pile of mail on the doormat or an overflowing mailbox outside is a clear sign that you'll be away for an extended period.

6. Install working cameras

Cameras always act as a deterrent, especially when you've installed several. If burglars see cameras, they know they can be identified on video. The risk for burglars, therefore, is that they might miss existing cameras because they're not directly visible. Many burglars won't want to risk being identifiably captured on video.

Bonus tip: Choose SKG*** locks .

Have your home inspected

It's also crucial to ensure burglars simply can't break in. Good locks and hinges are crucial. Have a building inspection performed to determine how burglar-proof your new home is, so you know what you still need to do to improve it.
