Ventilation grilles on glazing/frame

Ensuring a healthy indoor environment hinges on proper ventilation, yet many homes suffer from overlooked or insufficiently maintained ventilation grilles. Discover why regular upkeep is crucial for optimal airflow and learn practical tips for maintaining these essential components, so you can preserve both your home's air quality and structural integrity.

If the home lacks balanced ventilation: both air extraction and air intake are mechanical with balanced ventilation, usually through supply and exhaust valves mounted in a ceiling or wall. Because this form of ventilation and extraction is not present and the extraction is accomplished differently, it's important that fresh air can enter the home through grilles. Such grilles are usually located above the glazing or above a window frame in all living areas, ensuring a healthy indoor climate.

  • Living areas include bedrooms, the kitchen, and the living room, provided these spaces have a window that opens onto the outside.
  • In existing frames, glazing can be replaced and a grille can be mounted directly onto the glazing.
  • Any hinged, casement or tilt and turn windows can be replaced with 'fixed' glass with a grille mounted on the glazing.
  • Maintenance of ventilation grilles often forgotten

If ventilation grilles above the windows/frames are no longer fully or partially functioning, the ventilation in your home is disrupted and unhealthy. In such cases, ventilation grilles will need to be replaced. The downside of this is often that the glazing has to be removed and replaced, which can damage the paintwork, and so on. Consult a qualified glass retailer; they may have some interesting options for you.

  • The easiest way to clean the grille is to vacuum the open grille.
  • If necessary, the hood can be unclicked and the hood and the interior can be cleaned with lukewarm soapy water.
  • Never spray aggressive cleaning agents, lubricants or other liquids into the grille.
