Maintenance of ventilation grilles often forgotten

Regular home maintenance often overlooks the critical task of checking ventilation grilles, potentially leading to costly repairs and health risks from polluted indoor air. Discover how a simple routine can safeguard your home and health, and learn why professional inspections could be your best ally in maintaining an optimal living environment.

Most people keep a simple checklist for home maintenance. Think, for example, of replacing AC filters annually and cleaning gutters. Maintaining your ventilation grilles is another, lesser-known chore that's often forgotten or left until the last minute. Often, by then it's too late, and external contractors have to be called in.

Prevent trouble

Regularly checking ventilation grilles can prevent high repair costs. When ventilation problems arise in a home, a number of problems can arise. It's all too common for residents and business owners to forget to check their ducts after installation. This can cause very real problems. If the problem goes unnoticed for long enough, it can even cause respiratory problems for the occupants.

Air pollution factors

Some factors directly related to indoor air pollution include the use of a standard fiberglass filter in the air circulation system, pets, smokers, dusty furniture, and "dust trails" or discoloration on the air duct registers. Dirt, dust, mold, and dander are recirculated through the air ducts every time the central air conditioner is turned on. Combined with moisture, the air circulation system is a breeding ground for mold, germs, and household mildew.

Common symptoms

Common symptoms when occupants are exposed to polluted indoor air include headaches, nausea, and a burning sensation in the nose, throat, and/or eyes. Residents with respiratory problems (including allergies and/or asthma) tend to be at greater risk from polluted indoor air. Studies have also shown that polluted air ducts can spread certain diseases and viruses, including Salmonella, Strep, and Legionnaires' disease.

Construction technical inspections

It's highly recommended to clean an air circulation system every 2-5 years to eliminate indoor air pollution. If you're planning to buy a house or property, it's highly recommended to check whether your home's air circulation system is properly maintained.
