What does the SKG quality mark mean for my locks?

Protecting your home from burglary is crucial, and the right locks can significantly reduce the risk. Discover how the SKG quality mark's star rating can guide you in choosing the most effective locks to secure your property, and learn what steps you can take to ensure your home is adequately safeguarded.

Burglary protection is an important aspect of your (future) home. With the right locks, the risk of burglary is minimal. Burglary protection is important for every home, whether it's in a busy neighborhood or not. The advantage of locks with an SKG quality mark is that the number of stars indicates how burglar-resistant the lock is.

What does SKG stand for?

SKG stands for Foundation for Facade Quality. This independent organization tests the durability of hinges and locks. The SKG quality mark has a distinctive logo that immediately displays the number of stars a lock has. This SKG quality mark must always be immediately visible on a lock , so you don't have to unscrew anything, for example.

Meaning of SKG stars

The SKG quality mark uses a star system. An SKG-approved lock can have one, two, or three stars. The star rating is based on the time a burglar needs to force the lock.

  • An SKG 1-star lock is not inherently burglar-resistant. Such a lock must be installed with an equivalent star lock, or a stronger approved lock, to slow down a burglar.
  • A 2-star lock is independently burglar-resistant and can delay a burglar's entry for at least three minutes.
  • The 3-star lock is also independently burglar-resistant and will delay a burglar for at least five minutes.

Delaying a burglar by a few minutes may sound short, but it's very unappealing for a thief. After all, forcing the lock is the part of the burglary where they're most easily caught.

Locks without SKG quality mark

Locks and hardware without the SKG certification doesn't mean your home is unsafe. Modifying these locks can improve their burglar resistance. However, SKG locks are required for the Secure Home Certificate.

How safe is the home you want to buy?

Especially in older homes with ground-floor access, it's important to know the state of burglary prevention. A building inspection can provide more clarity. After such an inspection, you'll have a clear idea of any improvements that may need to be made to your locks and hinges. Feel free to contact Homekeur to schedule an appointment or with any questions about burglary prevention.
