Five simple tasks for less energy consumption

An average Dutch family of four living in a terraced house spends around €77 per month on electricity and around €85 on gas, totaling an average of €150 per month. This averages €1,800 per year, representing a significant portion of fixed costs. Do you think your energy consumption costs could be reduced?

Reduce energy costs

Saving energy is good for the environment and your wallet. If you can reduce your energy costs with a few simple tasks, there's no reason not to. You don't have to be a handyman to do the jobs below. Anyone can easily save on energy costs with these tips.

1. Get a programmable thermostat

Installing one is often a matter of tightening a few screws and connecting some wires. After that, the thermostat will do the work for you. This prevents you from forgetting to turn off the heating or unknowingly letting the temperature rise too high.

2. Insulate the central heating pipes

Installing a few simple insulation sleeves around pipes in unheated spaces is effortless. They're also readily available at any hardware store, so you can always find a suitable insulation sleeve for your central heating pipes.

3. Radiator foil

A lot of heat is often lost through the walls behind radiators. You can easily solve this problem yourself by applying radiator foil to the back of the radiator or to the wall.

4. Replace the shower head

A water-saving showerhead uses about 7 liters of water per minute compared to 12 liters for a standard showerhead. The water pressure is comparable, and so is the comfort. This is possible because the water-saving showerhead creates higher pressure in the hose. You'll save almost half the hot water, and therefore also the associated costs.

5. Use draft excluders

Especially on very cold days, a lot of heat escapes through cracks and crevices. Drafts not only waste energy, they often feel unpleasant. Installing draft excluders under your doors will keep the heat inside. Draft excluders are inexpensive and easy to install. Any hardware store will be happy to explain which materials are available and where they are best used.

Save on a new home?

Of course, there are many more possibilities. Has the list above gotten you thinking and are you wondering what else is possible in this area for your (new) home? During a building inspection, our inspectors will check the home's energy efficiency.

Would you like to make an appointment for a building inspection?

The cost of a building inspection (up to 250 m²) is only €489 including VAT. We'll conduct a comprehensive building inspection and you'll receive a building report. Do you have any questions? We're happy to help and can schedule an appointment with an expert inspector right away if you wish!
