5 Common Radiator Flaws

When purchasing a new home, overlooking radiator issues can lead to unexpected expenses and complications. Unveiling five common radiator defects, this guide highlights the importance of thorough inspections to ensure your home's heating system is in optimal condition, potentially saving you from costly repairs and ensuring a warm, problem-free environment.

Radiators require your attention when you're looking to buy a home. There can be quite a few things wrong with them, and this isn't always immediately apparent. When you're looking to buy a new home, it's important to have complete clarity about the condition of the property and everything that goes with it. Therefore, it's always recommended to have a building inspection carried out. This inspection includes checking the radiators. We're happy to provide you with insight into five common radiator defects that we often encounter during our building inspections.

1. The presence of rust

Rust formation is common on radiators, especially those in damp areas like bathrooms and basements. Rust formation doesn't stop on its own, so it's important to take immediate action when rust appears on a radiator. Not only should rust be removed, but the radiator should also be protected with a primer and paint.

2. Leakage on couplings

Another common problem is leaks at one or more connections. When the pressure in the system decreases, the leaks also decrease. A drop in pressure in the boiler system can lead to malfunctions and, in the case of a combination boiler, it can result in no hot water being available. In some cases, the problem can be solved by retightening the leaking connections. However, this doesn't always work. If this isn't sufficient, the connections must be replaced.

3. Incorrectly installed piping

Of course, problems can also arise with the pipework. In practice, we often see that the pipework is not installed correctly. This can lead to various problems, such as annoying noises during radiator use, leaks, and loosening of fittings. Repairing or optimizing the installation can usually be accomplished quickly, after which the problems are resolved.

4. Poor radiator mounting

It's crucial that the radiator is properly secured to the wall. If not, the connections can break. This often leads to leaking connections and higher repair costs. This can be prevented by optimizing the mounting.

5. Defects in the radiator valve

The radiator valve is a component that's easily overlooked. Yet, it does require attention, as radiator valves are also susceptible to defects and malfunctions. In some cases, it's possible to purchase replacement parts and fix the problem yourself. This doesn't have to be expensive. However, in other cases, it's necessary to replace the entire radiator valve, which carries a higher price tag.

Always have the radiators inspected properly

Problems with your radiators don't have to be serious to ultimately lead to high costs. It's therefore wise to have your radiators thoroughly inspected before you buy a home.
