When purchasing a new home, understanding the intricacies of underfloor heating can make a significant difference in energy efficiency and comfort. This guide highlights essential considerations for underfloor heating, from the type of system to optimal flooring choices, ensuring you make an informed decision that enhances your living space.
When buying a new home, the type of heating plays a significant role. You likely want even heat distribution that's also energy-efficient. Underfloor heating is a good option. Because the heat is distributed over a large surface area, you can set the thermostat lower than with conventional central heating. However, before you buy a house with underfloor heating, you should consider the following. We'll give you four key points.

1. Type of underfloor heating

First of all, the way the heat is generated plays a significant role in energy savings. There are two types of underfloor heating: electric and water-based. For lower energy bills, it's best to choose the latter. There are also open and closed systems. When the underfloor heating pipes are connected directly to the heat source, it's called an open system. If not, it's called a closed system. This uses a heat exchanger.

2. Pay attention to the type of floor

Underfloor heating works best under a non-insulating floor. With a thick carpet, you'll benefit less from the warmth. Carpet is also not a good combination with underfloor heating. Tiles and flagstones are the best options. Laminate flooring is also now available that is suitable for underfloor heating.

3. Location of the pipes

The deeper the pipes are buried, the less heat they will radiate into your home. However, they shouldn't be too close to the floor, as this can cause temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, they may be visible through bulges in the floor.

4. One or more thermostats

If you have underfloor heating in multiple rooms and want to be able to adjust the temperature in each room, you'll need multiple thermostats. Otherwise, the temperature in other rooms will adjust to the temperature set for the living room.
