Roof or facade penetrations

Roof and facade ducts are essential for ventilation and flue gas exhaust but pose significant risks, including vermin access, water ingress, and carbon monoxide leakage if not properly maintained. Regular inspections by qualified professionals can prevent these hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards, safeguarding your health and home.

Roof and/or facade ducts can be used in a variety of situations. Think of the flue gas exhaust from a central heating system, a bath, or a gas water heater. Ventilation systems also use roof or facade ducts. These ducts always pose a risk of vermin access, water ingress, or leakage. It's important to check these ducts periodically, and to have them replaced or repaired by a qualified professional.

  • Unprofessionally connected flue gas exhausts pose a major risk to your health.
  • If the flue gas exhaust of an older boiler is not connected properly, there is always a risk of carbon monoxide.

Comments about/defects in the roof or facade penetrations?

  • The top cover of the roof/facade duct may be missing; this can be replaced. Repair kits or parts for the duct are available.
  • There may be defects around the connection between the roof/facade penetration and the structural element. This naturally poses a risk of water ingress!
  • Flue gases must be able to exit the roof duct unhindered and disperse into the atmosphere. If the flue gas outlet is placed too close to a window or facade opening, normal use of the window and/or facade opening may not be possible. This can even pose a (serious) health risk. Standards have been established for the discharge and exhaust of flue gases. Consult an expert before using these facilities.
  • A certain construction period in a home may pose a risk of the presence of an asbestos flue or chimney flue. It's good to know that usually only the top meter of material is suspected of containing asbestos and is therefore easy to remove.
    • Asbestos fibres can be life-threatening if released and inhaled.
    • However, if you leave undamaged material in place, experts say there is no danger.
