Recognize woodworm and prevent worse!

After a long wait, the moment has arrived. You're about to buy your dream home. Everything seems perfect. That is, until the day the renovations begin. Then it might suddenly come to light that you're not the only occupant of your new house. Are there small holes of 3 to 4 mm in the beams or window frames? Then you're probably sharing your new home with woodworm.

Recognize the woodworm

Woodworms are insect larvae that live in wood. They are usually the larvae of the woodworm beetle. However, larvae of other beetles, such as the longhorn beetle, also occur. If woodworms are not treated in time, they can cause serious damage to the wood. Because the beetle larvae bore into the wood, wooden structures become more porous and more susceptible to the effects of weather and wind. This damage is not always immediately visible.

It's important to know when buying a house that woodworm isn't considered a hidden defect. It's therefore crucial to detect woodworm before you sign. Pay close attention to holes in the wood, as well as pulverized wood dust on the floor. The attic, as well as supporting beams, any wooden window frames, and wooden floors, deserve a thorough inspection.

What to do in case of woodworm?

If you discover woodworm and still want to buy the house, you'll need an expert to remove it. The house longhorn beetle is treated by injecting woodworm into the wood. This involves drilling holes into the wood and applying tubes of insecticide. If the wooden structures are already severely damaged, they will need to be reinforced. For example, if the roof structure is severely weakened, you'll need to call in a roofer.
