Rattling pipes in the house, what causes that?

Are the water pipes in your home making an unsettling rattling noise? This common issue, often caused by air in the pipes, can lead to more serious problems if left unaddressed. Discover how you can easily fix this annoyance yourself before it escalates, ensuring your home remains a peaceful and safe haven.

Rattling water pipes in your home are caused by air in the pipes. Air in the pipes develops automatically over time and is not a cause for concern. You can easily resolve this by bleeding the pipes. Rattling pipes can also be detected during a building inspection by Homekeur. Rattling pipes can occur in all homes, although it is sometimes related to the age of the pipes. Older homes are therefore more likely to experience this problem than newer homes.

How do you know if there is air in the pipes?

The easiest way to tell if there's air in the pipes is if they start to rattle. You'll hear a popping sound when you turn the tap on or off. This isn't alarming, but it's important to fix the problem, as it's certainly unpleasant. The video shows you how to easily bleed the pipes.

Consequences of a burst pipe

If you're experiencing rattling pipes and you don't address them or wait too long, it can have unpleasant consequences. The main consequences are:

  • The water pipe coming loose at connections
  • Wear and tear of the anchorage in the walls of the water pipe
  • Leakage due to metal fatigue in the water pipe

These are all unpleasant situations. It's therefore advisable to take immediate action as soon as you hear a rattling water pipe indicating a potential water hammer problem.

I have rattling pipes: what now?

If you're experiencing water hammer in your pipes, also known as rattling pipes, you can bleed them. You're probably familiar with this from your central heating system, which has bleed valves in various locations. If bleeding doesn't help, there might be a more serious problem. In that case, it's advisable to have a certified plumber take a look. They can completely empty and refill the pipes if necessary. This often solves the problem because there's no more air in the pipes.
