Top 10 pests in Dutch homes

Pest infestations can wreak havoc on your home, causing structural damage, spreading diseases, and creating unsanitary conditions. Whether it's termites, mice, or wasps, understanding the potential impact of these unwelcome guests is crucial for maintaining a safe and comfortable living environment. Discover how professional pest control services can protect your home and ensure peace of mind.

Did you know there are millions of insect species in the world? That's a huge number of pests. And we haven't even mentioned rodents, which like to build their nests in and around your home. Pest nests are often found in and around the eaves of houses, behind shutters, and even in playground equipment.

1. Termites

Termites are one of the most destructive pests. They generally swarm in the spring. It's important to have an annual termite inspection to prevent costly damage. A single termite colony can contain an average of 3 million members. There are documented cases of 70 million termites being found!

2. Mice

House mice are active year-round and nest in warm, quiet places like walls or cabinets. They gnaw constantly, damaging furniture and chewing on packaging to find food. Mice are also known to spread diseases.

3. Cockroaches

Cockroaches like to live in warm houses, kitchens, and wall cavities. They often emerge in the dark, feed on any type of food, and can carry diseases.

4. Wasps

Wasps can become a problem in your garden and often enter through open windows. Large wasp nests can contain over 25,000 wasps! Nests can be found in eaves, wall cavities, trees, shrubs, and underground.

5. Mosquitoes

More than 3,531 mosquito species have been described, 36 of which have been observed in the Netherlands. They bite frequently and become a problem as temperatures rise in spring and summer. While they don't yet pose a fatal threat, they can cause considerable irritation and discomfort.

6. Rats

Rats have been on the rise in recent years. They inhabit sewers, feed on what's in our garbage bags, and prefer to build their nests under our homes. Signs of infestation include feces and teeth marks on electrical wires, which can pose a fire hazard. Rats are known to spread diseases.

7. Flying

Whether it's house flies or fruit flies, these pests can carry a wide range of diseases, including food poisoning bacteria.

8. Bed bugs

Contrary to their name, bed bugs can also be found in cracks and crevices. They feed on human blood and are very difficult to control because they spread quickly.

9. Ants

Ants enter homes in search of food. Ant nests are often found on lawns, in warm, dry soil, and under paved surfaces. Look for finely pulverized soil.

10. The silverfish

Silverfish live in drier places, such as boxes containing old items like documents and photos. In large numbers, silverfish can wreak havoc on your wallpaper, books, paper, clothing, wall coverings, or your cherished stamp collection.
