Payback period for solar panels after 2020

Thinking about installing solar panels but unsure how upcoming changes to government subsidies might impact your investment? Discover how evolving energy feed-in compensation rules post-2020 could alter the financial landscape for solar energy, and learn what factors to consider to maximize the benefits for your home.

Are you considering installing solar panels on your roof? It's good to know that the rules for government subsidies will change after 2020. The main difference lies in the energy feed-in process. Currently, this is still very straightforward.

Compensation will change after 2020

If you generate more energy than you use at any given time, it will be returned to the energy company. You will receive compensation for this. Currently, the compensation is roughly equal to what you would pay if you consumed it. This will change after 2020.

Netting scheme will disappear

Currently, most households still use electricity from the energy company. In such cases, the electricity returned is offset against the electricity consumed. This is very advantageous, because you also get a tax refund, and two-thirds of the electricity price is made up of taxes. Starting in 2020, the energy company will refund you the basic rate, and the government will compensate you for the tax portion. The amount of this final compensation is not yet known. In any case, the government considers the current compensation too high.

Explore all possibilities

The change in the compensation for returned energy will certainly lengthen the payback period for solar panels. However, the price has been declining for years, and experts expect this trend to continue. Also, explore local subsidies, as many municipalities offer separate subsidies. There are also differences in compensation per energy supplier, and these will clearly have an even greater impact on the payback period after 2020.

Every house is different

Every home is different, and naturally, the cost-effectiveness of your solar panels depends on that. For example, how large is your roof? And which side faces the largest part? If it faces south, you know your solar panels will capture the most sunshine. Furthermore, the purchase price and energy supplier rates vary.
