Are you required to purchase a (hybrid) heat pump?

As the world shifts towards sustainability, the Netherlands is leading the way by making hybrid heat pumps the new standard for home heating as of 2026. This transition not only promises significant reductions in natural gas usage and energy bills but also enhances home value and energy ratings, making it a compelling option for homeowners considering future-proofing their properties. Discover how this change can benefit you and why early adoption might be the smartest move.

The traditional central heating boiler is no longer the norm. The hybrid heat pump is now the norm. Housing Minister Hugo de Jonge announced in mid-2022 that the traditional central heating boiler is to be replaced by the hybrid heat pump. A hybrid heat pump can potentially improve a home's energy rating , as it's an energy-saving measure. Many people wonder if this means a hybrid heat pump will become mandatory. Homekeur is happy to tell you more.

More sustainable heating should become the norm

The country needs to become more sustainable. The whole world, in fact, needs to become more sustainable. This can be achieved in several ways. When we look at heating, we see that a hybrid heat pump is the ideal way to heat sustainably. Currently, most Dutch homes are still heated with natural gas, although many new homes are completely gas-free and equipped with an electric heat pump. This uses the outside air as energy and heats the home, essentially working in conjunction with the central heating boiler. This is both financially more advantageous and significantly more sustainable.

Do you need to replace your traditional central heating boiler now?

The Dutch government has indicated that the hybrid heat pump should become the standard in our country. However, this cannot be implemented immediately. It has been decided that the hybrid heat pump should become the minimum standard starting in 2026. This means that it is not yet mandatory to use a hybrid heat pump if your traditional central heating boiler is still working. If it breaks down, it is of course advisable to opt for a hybrid heat pump immediately. While it is not yet mandatory, it is wise to do so if the option is available.

Mandatory for replacement from 2026

Does your traditional central heating boiler need to be replaced in or after 2026? Then you're required to install at least a hybrid heat pump. While a hybrid heat pump doesn't operate entirely gas-free, it does consume significantly less gas than a traditional boiler. It's important to note that the hybrid heat pump will become the minimum standard for reducing gas consumption. Therefore, installing a heat pump that runs entirely on electricity is also permitted.

What are the benefits of a hybrid heat pump?

Having a hybrid heat pump offers several interesting advantages. First, you'll be much less dependent on natural gas. Natural gas consumption decreases significantly with the installation of a hybrid heat pump. Naturally, this also means you can save on your energy bill. Furthermore, you can improve your home's energy rating by having a hybrid heat pump installed. A more positive energy rating means, among other things, a higher property value, which creates an even greater financial advantage when you want to sell your home. A definitive energy rating is mandatory when selling your home. Would you like to apply for a definitive energy rating ? Then you're welcome to contact Homekeur. Would you like to know more first?
