Does your home have enough smoke detectors?

Ensuring fire safety in your home starts with the right smoke detectors, yet many homeowners underestimate their importance and effective placement. This blog post explores why smoke detectors are crucial, how many you need, and what to look for when purchasing, offering essential insights to safeguard your home and loved ones.

One of the things we inspect during a building inspection is fire safety. Purchasing a good smoke detector significantly increases your home's safety. Why is a smoke detector important, and how many smoke detectors are best installed in your home? And what makes a good smoke detector? We'll answer these questions in this blog post.

Increase fire safety

Unlike neighboring countries, a smoke detector isn't always mandatory. This applies to existing homes. New construction and renovation projects are, however, subject to mandatory smoke detectors. A smoke detector increases the fire safety of your home. In most cases, victims of fires inhale smoke. When you're asleep, you're less likely to smell anything. Because smoke contains many toxic gases, you can quickly become unconscious, often within minutes. A smoke detector emits a loud signal as soon as it detects smoke. This way, even if you're asleep, you'll receive a timely warning of a fire.

What is a good smoke detector?

There are various smoke detectors on the market. When purchasing a smoke detector, it's important to ensure it meets the requirements of the European standard EN 14604. Some reliable brands of smoke detectors include:

  • Egg Electronics
  • Honeywell
  • Sensotec Firehawk
  • Hager

The smoke detectors from these manufacturers have been extensively tested and comply with European guidelines. In an apartment, a single smoke detector in a central location, such as the hallway between the kitchen and living room, is sufficient. In a multi-story home, it's advisable to install a smoke detector on each floor.

Maintaining a smoke detector

To ensure your smoke detector continues to function optimally, it's important to clean it regularly. A smoke detector has a lifespan of ten years. However, the sensor that detects smoke is sensitive to dust and vapor. Regularly cleaning your smoke detector with a slightly damp cloth or the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner will keep it clean. Most smoke detectors have an alkaline battery, which you should replace annually. A smoke detector with a lithium battery doesn't need to have its battery replaced.
