Renovating a house takes a very long time!

Planning to renovate your home? Act fast! Due to a shortage of construction workers, waiting lists are growing. Currently, 20% of construction companies don't have enough skilled workers to meet the growing demand.

Rising prices in the construction sector

According to economist Floris Jansen of Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the labor shortage is causing prices to rise. The bureau released new figures on the construction sector in August. Prices are expected to rise monthly.

Staff shortage

The Dutch Construction Industry Association (Bouwend Nederland) doesn't expect this situation to change anytime soon. According to a spokesperson, there's a shortage of 8,000 new entrants each year. New professionals must first be trained, which also takes considerable time.

Unfilled vacancies

The number of vacancies in construction hasn't been this high since 2009. At the beginning of 2017, there were 11,400 unfilled positions. Many construction companies are desperately searching for staff but can't find anyone.

If it were up to Bouwend Nederland (Dutch Construction Industry Association), it's time for a charm offensive. Besides the staff shortage, many companies are also facing an aging workforce. Young people often still associate the construction sector with hard and dirty work, so according to a spokesperson, it's high time to highlight the positive aspects. Working in construction is attractive and varied. Construction also offers ample opportunities for freelancers to pursue their own careers.

Renovating a house takes a long time

The future remains to be seen what the charm offensive will achieve. What is clear, however, is that the staff shortage is impacting homeowners. Anyone wanting a new bathroom installed will face higher rates and long waiting lists. The result: that new bathroom or kitchen will take a very long time to arrive.
