Securing your home against core pulling: here's how

Are you concerned about the security of your home and wondering if your locks are truly up to the task of keeping burglars at bay? Discover how understanding the concept of core pulling and upgrading to SKG-rated locks could be the key to safeguarding your home, and learn how a professional inspection can pinpoint vulnerabilities before they become a burglar's opportunity.

Core pulling might be a term you're not familiar with. It originates from burglary prevention. A burglar uses a small object and a core puller to pull out the entire core of a lock. If the lock is too weak, this can be done in seconds. After that, it's very easy to open the door.

Often, all you need is a wrench. Burglary protection should focus on the weak points in a home, and a lock can certainly play a significant role in this. Of course, the rest of the door hardware is also important.

Highly secured locks are possible

If you feel your current lock is no longer up to par or you don't feel safe with your current door hardware, there are options for better security. A lock with an SKG quality mark, for example, indicates with 3 stars that the cylinder can withstand a tensile force of 1,500 kilograms. That's obviously impossible for a burglar . However, it's also clear that such a lock costs extra, and perhaps your door hardware is still in such good condition that you're not considering it yet.

Check your home for burglary protection

It's always a matter of checking first and then adjusting as needed. Have a specialist check areas where a burglar might suspect weaknesses and take action. This applies primarily to your windows and exterior doors. Do they currently have basic hardware, and do you feel you're at risk of a burglary?

Then simply seek expert advice and have a specialist inspect your home for weak points. Sometimes, simply replacing a lock cylinder with one that has core pulling protection that meets SKG standards is sufficient.
