Fireplace maintenance often forgotten

It's wonderful to have your own fireplace. Are you considering buying a house? Then it might be a plus if it has one. However, it's important to remember that fireplace maintenance is one of the most overlooked tasks by homeowners. It's always a good idea to have a building inspection performed. Unfortunately, a flue inspection isn't included in the scope of a standard visual building inspection.

Optimal enjoyment of a fireplace is only possible when it's properly maintained. Already have a fireplace? Then you can use the 4 tips below to properly maintain your fireplace.

1. Remove the ash residue before each use

Ash residue can easily accumulate, especially during periods when the fireplace is used (almost) daily. It's recommended to remove the ash residue from the previous use before using the fireplace again. This way, you always start clean and ash doesn't have a chance to build up. We recommend using a special dustpan and brush set for removing ash residue. Ash residue often sticks easily to the brush when using a regular set.

2. Have the chimney swept

Especially when the fireplace hasn't been used for a while, such as in the summer, a disruption in the airflow can occur unnoticed. This can be caused by, for example, leaves falling from above into the chimney, nests built there, or soot particles. Ultimately, this can easily lead to a blockage. Light a piece of paper and hold it at the beginning of the chimney. This way, you can clearly see whether the smoke continues to rise or whether it (partially) flows back inside. In the latter case, the airflow is disrupted and the chimney needs to be swept. You can do this yourself, but you can also hire an experienced chimney sweep.

3. Clean the window properly

Is there a pane of glass around the fireplace or perhaps in the door? Then this pane should, of course, be cleaned regularly. Soot particles stick to the glass. This quickly makes the glass opaque, and soot particles continue to cling to it. Therefore, clean the glass regularly using only a paper towel. It is strongly advised not to clean the glass with cleaning products . Many cleaning products are (highly) flammable, which could cause a flash fire the next time you use them.

4. Perform regular checks

A key part of fireplace maintenance is performing a visual inspection. By looking closely, you can easily identify problems. Pay close attention to where the smoke is going. As soon as some smoke starts to enter, it's time to take action. If you have a closed fireplace, check the sealing cord regularly.
