Extension: Connection and glazing

Ensuring the integrity of your home's roofing and glazing systems is crucial for preventing water damage and maintaining structural soundness. This blog explores the importance of regular inspections and professional repairs, offering valuable insights into tackling issues like solder joint failures in zinc roofs and contamination in glazing, ultimately safeguarding your home’s longevity and aesthetic appeal.

Zinc cover strip extension

  • Zinc that is too long in total tends to crack at the solder joints, so it's advisable to check these solder joints regularly. If solder joints keep coming loose, a shrink piece can be applied to allow the materials to "move."
  • Solder joints on the zinc roof cladding of the extension may be loose or have already been repaired improperly. This poses a risk of water ingress and leakage. Using the correct materials and pretreatment, such defects can be repaired by a qualified professional.
    • Don't start covering seams with tape or the like; these are just 'band-aids' and will hardly have any function after less than a year.
    • Soldering zinc is a specialized job; not every plumber has this expertise yet.

Glazing & profiles

If the glazing is dirty and maintenance isn't performed immediately, there's a risk that the contamination will corrode the glazing, making cleaning impossible at some point.

If the conservatory's glass is broken or leaking, the glass panels must be replaced. In the event of serious damage (a safety risk), the glazing must be replaced immediately.

If double glazing is (partially) leaky, visibility becomes blurred and the RC (insulation) value is reduced. In itself, this is not a major technical problem and in theory it could remain this way.

If the rubber seals and/or sealant of the (profile) glazing beads and the glass connections are not in good condition, these connections must be replaced or improved. This also prevents water ingress. Replacing a profile is not easy; in the worst case, the glazing must be removed.

Polycarbonate sheets & profiles

Is the polycarbonate contaminated? If not maintained properly, contamination can corrode the material. This is detrimental to the lifespan of all the materials involved! Regular maintenance of the polycarbonate is always recommended.

  • Poor maintenance and pollution are unsightly and negatively impact the appearance of the home.
  • Is it unclear whether the polycarbonate needs to be removed before the rubber seals can be replaced or repaired? Consult a professional.
  • Replacing a profile is not easy; in the worst case, the polycarbonate must be removed.
