Energy label for commercial buildings: how does this work exactly?

Navigating the complexities of energy labeling for commercial buildings can be daunting, especially with the looming deadline mandating a minimum energy label of C by January 1, 2023. Discover the essential steps you need to take to ensure your commercial property complies with these new regulations and how Homekeur can seamlessly guide you through the process to enhance your building's energy efficiency.

The energy label for commercial buildings works slightly differently than the energy label for residential buildings. In some cases, a commercial building doesn't need an energy label, but in most cases, it's mandatory. The energy label for commercial buildings is mandatory when the building is completed, rented, or sold. Commercial buildings include hospitals, shops, schools, and offices. The Homekeur team can prepare an energy label for a commercial building if you need one.

Provide business energy label

Homekeur has years of experience conducting building inspections and providing NHG (National Mortgage Guarantee) reports, but we're also the right partner for energy labels. We can provide energy labels for both residential and commercial buildings. There's often confusion about the energy label for commercial buildings, precisely because it differs from that of residential buildings. We'd like to tell you more about the energy label for commercial buildings in this article.

Energy label considerations for commercial buildings

The energy label for non-residential buildings indicates how energy-efficient a building is. The best label available is A+++++, and the worst is G. To determine the correct energy label, the amount of fossil fuel used must be considered. The lower the consumption, the better the energy label. Essentially, we consider lighting, humidification, ventilation, hot water, cooling, and heating. Insulation also plays a significant role, as does the compactness of the building and its installed systems.

2023 obligation for label C

Does your commercial building currently have an energy label of D or worse? Then it's important to know that, as of January 1, 2023, it will be mandatory to have at least an energy label of C. This means making the building more sustainable and energy-efficient, so the energy label can be improved. If an office building doesn't have an energy label of C or better as of January 1, 2023, then the building may no longer be used as an office building from that date onwards, according to the Building Decree 2012. Therefore, carefully check whether your commercial building is required to have at least an energy label of C if it doesn't already have one.

Don't be late!

If your commercial building doesn't currently have an energy label C or better, but is required to have at least an energy label C as of January 1, 2023, we recommend you don't wait too long to take measures to make the building more energy-efficient.
