Introduction of the mandatory hybrid heat pump

In recent years, the Dutch government has taken more measures to reduce CO2 emissions and limit the use of fossil fuels. One of these measures was the introduction of a requirement to install a hybrid heat pump starting in 2026 if a traditional gas boiler breaks down. Hybrid heat pumps combine a heat pump with a gas-fired central heating boiler. This system uses the heat pump to heat the home for most of the year, while the central heating boiler kicks in during the coldest days. This leads to a significant reduction in gas consumption and CO2 emissions. Is a hybrid heat pump already installed in the home you are considering buying? Installing a hybrid heat pump can entail significant costs. Furthermore, technical challenges can arise, especially in older homes. There are several ways to make homes more sustainable. By lifting the requirement, the government aims to give homeowners more flexibility to choose the best solution for their specific situation. Furthermore, the government wants to consider potential new innovations that are even more effective and cost-efficient than hybrid heat pumps.

Making your home more sustainable in other ways

Now that the requirement to install a hybrid heat pump has been lifted as of 2026, homeowners can choose alternatives to make their homes more sustainable. These options include a fully electric heat pump, solar panels, full home insulation, a pellet stove or biomass stove, or solar thermal energy. The removal of the hybrid heat pump requirement offers you more freedom of choice when making your home more sustainable.

More clarity with a building inspection

A building inspection, or structural survey, primarily gives you a clear picture of the property's condition. The foundation, electrical system, and the condition of the facade and roof are inspected, among other things.
