Five dangers of an old central heating boiler

Old or poorly maintained central heating boilers can occasionally emit toxic carbon monoxide gas. This gas is often called the "silent killer." If you plan to move into a property where central heating boilers are still in use, it's highly recommended to have them inspected. This ensures that your boiler and your home are safe.

Dangers of an old central heating boiler

A well-maintained boiler can last up to fifteen years. The older your boiler, the harder it becomes to heat your home. Here are five dangers of an old boiler and why you should consider replacing it:

1. The central heating boiler is more than fifteen years old

The average lifespan of a central heating boiler is about fifteen years. While routine maintenance can extend the life of your boiler, advances in technology mean that many of the components for your boiler model are no longer available.

2. Heating up takes longer

Modern boilers produce heat almost instantly, so if you find yourself waiting longer for your home to feel warm or for hot water to come through, it might be time to consider a new model.

3. The flame is yellow instead of blue

If your boiler burns with a yellow flame, this could be a sign of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a tasteless and odorless gas that is difficult to detect. At low levels, it can mimic flu-like symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Higher exposure can cause breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.

4. More frequent repairs

If you find yourself frequently resetting or topping up the pressure in your boiler, it might be time to replace it. While a new boiler may seem like a significant investment, the mounting costs of boiler repairs can be frustrating.

5. Strange noises

Strange, buzzing noises are not typical of your boiler and can often occur due to wear and tear on the pump or fan. Have your boiler checked by a professional technician as soon as possible to ensure it is safe.
