What exactly is PUR insulation material?

PUR is a plastic also known as polyurethane. This material consists of two components, isocyanate and polyol, which are mixed together during the spraying process. During mixing, a reaction occurs between the two components, resulting in a foam filled with cells. The type of blowing agent and the blowing method determine whether the cells are closed (hard foam) or open (soft foam). PUR foam is not only suitable for insulation. The material is also used in baby seats, car seats, and mattresses, among other things.

Floor insulation with PUR foam: the benefits

There are certainly interesting advantages to using polyurethane foam as floor insulation. Because it's a foam, it's very easy to apply to all the nooks, crannies, and crevices. This creates completely seamless insulation. Pipes don't pose any obstacles; the foam easily conforms to them. Polyurethane foam is moisture-resistant, making it ideal for use in crawl spaces, where damp conditions are common.

In addition, it has a high insulation value, with a lambda value of 0.026 W/m*K. It's easy to apply and doesn't have to be expensive. Polyurethane foam is also perfect for retrofitting.

Floor insulation with PUR foam: the disadvantages

There are also some disadvantages to floor insulation with polyurethane foam. First of all, it's not an environmentally friendly choice. During the insulation process, chemical gases are released, namely HFOs and HFCs. However, more and more versions are coming onto the market that contain fewer or no chemical gases. Polyurethane foam must be installed according to strict regulations, especially because safety precautions must be taken into account due to the higher concentration of toxic substances.

The insulation is difficult to remove when necessary. It adheres to surrounding materials, making it difficult to remove. In most cases, it's necessary to leave the house for several hours during the work, and it requires extensive ventilation. In cases of existing moisture problems, PUR foam can also sometimes go wrong in practice.
