Six benefits of a wood stove
In some older homes, you'll still find a wood-burning stove. A wood-burning stove evokes a bygone era and provides plenty of warmth. Although wood-burning stoves require more work and maintenance (gathering, drying, and lugging wood) than central heating, they also offer several practical advantages.
Atmosphere enhancing
The first thing we often think of when we think of a wood-burning stove is the ambiance. The dancing flames, the wood aroma, and the intense heat truly create a cozy atmosphere. Your room will also quickly become pleasantly warm.
A high return
A wood stove generates a lot of heat for relatively little fuel. You can buy firewood or gather it yourself. Firewood isn't very expensive, and chopping or gathering it yourself is even more economical. A wood stove is highly efficient because relatively little heat escapes through the chimney. A modern wood stove can achieve an efficiency of up to 75%. With a soapstone stove, this efficiency can reach as high as 90%.
Wood is cheap
Wood is an inexpensive fuel, especially for a wood-burning stove, which requires less wood than, for example, a fireplace. It's important to burn dry, untreated wood. Also, burn wood instead of paper or cardboard. The latter two produce a lot of ash and smoke.
Cheap to purchase
A wood stove is relatively inexpensive to purchase, especially when compared to the price of a gas fireplace, for example.
Reheating food
Combine the pleasant with the useful. If the wood stove is already burning, you can use the warmth to heat up soup or hot chocolate. There are even wood stoves with built-in ovens.
Modern wood stoves
A modern wood-burning stove produces less smoke than an older model. Recent wood-burning stoves also come in many different styles and sizes. You can always find a model that perfectly suits your interior.
