Advantages and disadvantages of different hobs

Choosing the right cooktop can transform your culinary experience, but with a myriad of options from gas to induction, making an informed decision can be daunting. This guide will help you navigate the pros and cons of each type, ensuring your investment aligns perfectly with your lifestyle and home's infrastructure.

Cooking is likely one of the most important activities in your home. Preparing a meal can be done on various types of cooktops, of course. These vary considerably in both use and price. By making a well-considered choice, you'll find a purchase that suits your lifestyle and your home.

Cooking on gas

The most well-known and also the oldest way to cook is with a gas cooktop. Of all cooktops, this one is the most affordable to purchase and operate. This is especially true if your (future) home has a gas connection. A gas cooktop provides fast temperature transfer, which many people find comfortable.

Disadvantages of a gas hob

A disadvantage of a gas cooktop is that it's harder to clean than a ceramic or induction cooktop. It doesn't have a smooth surface. The risk of accidents is slightly higher when cooking on gas than with induction or ceramic.

Electric and ceramic cooking

For homes without a gas connection, an electric or ceramic hob is the most convenient option. Electric cooking does require (additional) circuits in the meter box. In some cases, sockets need to be installed in the kitchen, or additional wiring is required. An electric hob is the most expensive to run because it consumes a lot of electricity.

More expensive, but cleaner

Ceramic cooktops, in particular, are often a bit more expensive to purchase. Unlike an electric cooktop, a ceramic cooktop has a gas hob on top of the system. This makes a ceramic cooktop easy to clean and safe.

The induction hob

Induction cooktops are known for their high efficiency. This means minimal heat loss while cooking. With an induction cooktop, the heat goes directly to the pan. Only the pan itself is heated. This makes induction cooking the safest way to cook.

Most economical way of cooking

An induction cooktop runs on electricity, but its high efficiency makes it much more energy-efficient than an electric or ceramic cooktop. However, an induction cooktop does require its own circuit in the meter cupboard.

Homekeur maps the situation

A building inspection can clarify which cooktop best suits your needs and (future) home. After such an inspection, it will be clear, for example, which cooktop is realistically suitable for your home. Feel free to contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our building inspectors.
