Advice for novice painters after purchasing a house

Before diving into painting and decorating your new home, it's essential to consider factors like time, materials, and surface conditions to ensure a successful makeover. Proper preparation, including surface inspection and choosing the right colors, can transform your space efficiently and effectively, so consulting a specialist might just be the key to avoiding costly mistakes.

Many new homeowners want to start painting and decorating immediately after handing over the keys. Perhaps the building inspection revealed that some walls needed repainting. Naturally, you'll want to tackle this job right away. Whether that's wise depends on your answers to the following questions. Do you have enough time to complete the painting, or can someone come help? What materials are needed, and do you have them available? If the work is outdoors, is the weather forecast favorable?

Good preparation is important

First, check the existing surface. Water-based paints and turpentine-based paints cannot simply be used on top of each other. Are there any cracks or holes that need filling? Is there rising damp or wood rot in the window frames? Such problems must be resolved before you plan to paint. If in doubt, consult a specialist. This will provide you with tailored advice and ensure the surface is ready for painting.

Cleaning up and sanding

Clear the space you plan to paint as much as possible. Protect the floor with drop cloths or cardboard. Now you can roll up your sleeves and grab the sander. Also, consider your own health and wear a face mask to avoid inhaling dust. It's not necessary to sand the wood completely bare, but it should be smooth. Are there any seams that need sealing? Then use a paintable sealant.

Color creates atmosphere

Consider the room's location and function when choosing a new color. Sunny yellow exudes optimism, but it can be too much of a good thing if the sun is already shining all day. Dark colors make a room feel smaller, but are beautiful if you want an accent wall. Paint is certainly a great space to experiment with. Choose a silver metallic or create a cloudy effect with two colors layered together. If you don't like it, don't worry. With a fresh can of paint, you can easily make the room your own again.
