1. What is the energy label intended for?
The energy label actually serves several purposes. First and foremost, it's intended to give homebuyers a good impression of a house's features, particularly its energy-efficient properties. It also encourages homeowners to make their homes more energy-efficient. The more positive the energy label, the higher the value of a property.
2. What is a provisional energy label?
A provisional energy label is essentially an estimated energy label. All homeowners received a provisional energy label from the Dutch government in 2015. This label is based on an estimate. No research has been conducted into the actual energy efficiency of the home. If you intend to sell your home or have implemented energy-saving measures and require a new energy label, the provisional energy label will be replaced by a definitive energy label. This label is, however, determined based on research.
3. Is a definitive energy label mandatory?
In certain situations, it's mandatory to have a definitive energy label for your home. This requirement applies when you intend to rent out or sell your home. A definitive energy label must be presented upon handing over the keys. A provisional energy label is invalid if you intend to rent out or sell the home. If you continue to live in the home, you are not required to replace the provisional energy label with a definitive one. This is, of course, permitted. If you rent out or sell the home with a provisional energy label, you will be subject to a fine of up to €405.
4. How can you improve an energy label?
There are several ways to improve a home's energy rating. For example, you can replace single-pane windows with double glazing or high-efficiency glass, replace your old boiler with a more energy-efficient option, purchase a solar water heater, or have solar panels installed. Of course, good insulation also improves your home's energy efficiency. You can insulate the floor, walls, and roof.
5. Why is improving the energy label interesting?
Improving your energy rating is beneficial for several reasons. A better energy rating means your home offers greater living comfort. It also means lower energy bills, simply because you're using energy more efficiently. Another important advantage of a better energy rating is that it increases property value. Homes with a positive energy rating sell faster and for a higher price than homes with a negative rating.

The cost of an energy label (up to 190 m²) is only €349 including VAT. A certified energy advisor will visit you, inspect the property, and officially register the energy label in EP-online.
